Piano Lessons Vestavia Rockin List 2

  • Three Preludes for Piano, Prelude 2 – George Gershwin

Starting at 1:45 in this video, you hear the second of Gershwin’s Three Preludes for Piano. The melody begins in the middle register, then is played in octaves, utilizing the higher register of the keyboard. Then, in the second section, the melody is played in the left hand in the bass register. A perfect example of high and low on the piano! I just love this piece!

  • The Swan from Carnival of the Animals – Camille Saint-Saens

I love Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens. Each piece within the large work depicts a different animal, and Saint-Saens uses music to describe things like how they move or the sounds they make. It’s so creative, and I LOVE using it with little ones! Their imagination really takes flight! The Swan is a beautiful demonstration of harmonies supporting a melody. The cello has the melody while the piano plays the accompaniment making it very obvious which instrument has melody and which has harmony.

  • Kinderszenen Op. 15, No. 11 – Robert Schumann

Every classical and non-classical pianist needs to know about Schumann’s Kinderszenen! It’s an adorable collection of short pieces that depict “Scenes from Childhood,” which is the English translation of the name of the German collection. It demonstrates fast and slow tempo perfectly! Can you hear how these short sections are differing in tempo? This recording is played by my favorite pianist of all time Vladimir Horowitz.
